What is cut?

We often think of a diamond’s cut as shape (round, oval, radiant, cushion), but a diamond’s cut grade is really about how well a diamond’s proportions, symmetry and polish are.

Accoring to GIA, to determine the cut grade of the standard round brilliant diamond – the shape that dominates the majority of diamond jewelry – GIA calculates the proportions of those facets that influence the diamond’s face-up appearance. These proportions allow GIA to evaluate how successfully a diamond interacts with light to create desirable visual effects such as:

  • Brightness: Internal and external white light reflected from a diamond
  • Fire: The scattering of white light into all the colors of the rainbow
  • Scintillation: The amount of sparkle a diamond produces, and the pattern of light and dark areas caused by reflections within the diamond
Do white gold ring turn yellow over time?

White gold rings can yellow over time as the rhodium wears off. If you bring in your jewelry every 6 months for a clean & check, we will be able to let you know if your jewelry needs rhodium treatment. Avoid using creams/lotions or other chemicals while wearing your jewelry to help keep its brilliant shine longer.

How to differentiate lab-grown from natural diamonds?

Man-made diamonds can only be differentiated from earth mined diamonds using specialized equipment that can detect the minor differences in trace elements and crystal growth. Using a jewellery loupe, synthetic gemstones are almost intractable to distinguish from mined diamonds. Synthetic diamonds may demonstrate unalike trace matters than Earth Mined diamonds. But this does not influence the way the stone looks.

The price difference varies based on the market and rarity of the stone’s cut and clarity, but usually, most synthetic diamonds are about 20% to 40% less than a similar earth mined diamond.

Are lab-grown diamonds real?

One cannot call a lab-grown diamond not real. Though they are man-made, they have all the properties, chemical and visual, of an earth mined diamond. Any jeweler or diamond consultant cannot make out the difference between the two stones without the necessary equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are produced with the same carbon atom, pressure and heat of the mined diamonds.

What is a Conflict Diamond?

Conflict diamonds, according to the most common definition, are diamonds used by rebel groups to finance civil wars. However, besides civil wars, diamond mining today is plagued by a range of shocking ethical abuses. These include violence by governments, child labor, extreme poverty, and environmental devastation. At Brilliant Earth, we believe that the diamond industry needs to focus on addressing all of these problems, which is why in addition to selling beyond conflict free™ diamonds, 5% of our profits are donated to help communities impacted by the jewelry trade build a brighter future with education, environmental restoration and economic development.
